Anorexia & hair loss - small patches or overall thinning?

I know anorexia can cause hair loss.

But does it cause small individual bald patches, or just overall thinning of the hair?

Could it cause both, or just either or?

Thanks. =)Anorexia %26amp; hair loss - small patches or overall thinning?
Hi there, I've struggled with this myself. I'm not here to judge you, I hope you'll find the resources helpful. As for your question:

';In Anorexia and Bulimia, the Anagen (growing phase) of the hair cycle is prematurely terminated by starvation, gastric abnormalities or reduced vital organ performance.

The hair follicles skip the Catogen phase and enter the Telogen (loss phase). The resulting excessive hair losses (telogen effluvium) commence 6-12 weeks later. Read more

The average scalp has 84000 - 145000 hairfollicles. In healthy persons at any given time, approximately 80-90% of scalp follicles are in the hair producing (anagen) phase, with 10-20% in the telogen phase. Normal average daily hair loss is 60-150 hairs.In Telogen Effluvium, the anagen and telogen ratios change dramatically. Statistics are unreliable. The author has observed patients loosing all but the shortest hairs within 6-12 weeks of the onset. ';

I hope this is understandable because i just want to clarify the question first and i am not insulting you in the least it is a good question.

It seems logical to say the both/ and but then i am ruling out the either/or so I have just made a contradiction. So you see my point as elementary that it is. (Philosophically or scientifiically ) I think there might be a corelation which I have heard of but never actually done the reasearch

my sense and my thinking are different epistemically.

So to say it is both the patches orr the overall is based on what is sense and quite often science does not make ';sense'; that is a different subject.

Make sense? don't worry it isn't supposed to

=P
I had small patches of hair loss due to my hypothyroidism. Anorexia can mess with the thyroids along with other things.
